My initial months with ITSUS Consulting have been challenging, rewarding and exciting. I’ve experienced new situations, worked with new equipment and learned new things, all whilst being surrounded by the support of a fantastic team.
During the first few months, after being given time to settle into the company ethos, I got to know current engineers and learn about various projects they have been involved in, including what was expected of them. As a recent graduate, getting the chance to spend time with industry respected engineers and learn about their experiences has been great for my professional development. Since day one I have had the time to practice with real lab kit, such as Cisco ASA’s, Routers and Switches. Using this kit to study for Cisco’s exams really helped me understand how to apply my knowledge in real world scenarios.
My work hasn’t all been in the office; I’ve also had the chance to visit the headquarters of one of our clients. I shadowed existing Network Engineer, Marc Williams, complete an end of project handover meeting and also saw the implementation of an IPSec Site-To-Site VPN. I’ve visited the UK Headquarters of our partner IXIA, where I gained an insight into their vast range of products and even had a tour of their server room. I’ve also had the opportunity to shadow one of IXIA’s engineers while they were conducting network testing using their BreakingPoint equipment. Due to ITSUS being one of the core members of the South Wales Cyber Security Cluster, I was able to visit and have a tour of Newport’s Next Generation Data Centre. The site is a colossal 75,000sqm and Europe’s largest Tier 3 data centre, so it was impressive to say the least!
ITSUS have recently been recognised for how much time and money they invest in their staff by being awarded the silver accreditation from Investors in People (IIP). Their encouragement for professional development is unrivalled and I truly believe with their support I can achieve a lot in coming months.
